Introduction

Anand Agricultural University is the top ranking university in India well known for quality education, research as well as extension education in the field of agriculture and allied sciences. The university has five well developed faculties namely; Agriculture, Veterinary science and animal husbandry, Dairy science, Food processing technology & bio-energy and Information technology in agriculture. Diploma programmes in Agriculture and Home Science, Entrepreneurship training in Bakery, Poultry and Mali etc. short term academic activities also run under Directorate of Extension Education along with informal educational programmes and other extension activities.

Institute

Anand Agricultural University is located at milk city of India i.e. Anand in the State of Gujarat. It is on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad main rail line and the Express highway and National Highway No.8.  Ahmedabad (70 km) has International while Vadodara (40 km) has domestic airport.  

The “School of Home Science” established in 1959 to educate the farmers’ daughter to co-up with education in agriculture. The institute was the first of its kind in the state of Gujarat. The school offers world-class education in Home Science to meet the increasing demand of health and nutrition, processed or preserved food, hospitality management alongwith child care, house decoration and furniture and human relationship as an art of home. It offers Diploma programme in Home Science that provide art of home training to students.

Aims and Objectives

The Vision :

 

To develop overall competence and motivation to adopt scientific approach towards home science and thereby equip students to handle

Aims :

  • Development of scientific attitude among students towards home science.

  • Facilitate students to adopt the systematic knowledge for effective home management.

  • Motivate students towards self-employment by developing skill and work efficiency.

Objective :

 

The main objective of the scheme is to teach and train the secondary pass students to enable them to perform and supervise various activities in the different areas of home science to spread the knowledge among the people, to earn wages,  to become self employed and to get higher education. The specific objectives are mentioned in the next slide.

 

Specific Objectives :

  •  To conduct academic program leading to Diploma in Home Science (DHSc) to develop human resources in the various fields of home science.

  • To carry out extension activities in the areas of home science keeping the liaison with the different agencies for effective training and transfer of technologies.

  • To carry out basic research to support education and extension activities.

  • To develop a perspective for multi disciplinary experience.

Infrastructure

The institute possesses adequate infrastructure which consists of :

  • A separate building of about two hundred sq. m. area housing lecture & seminar rooms, conference hall, library, laboratories, faculty and administrative offices, workshop etc.

  • Five departments to teach different courses:

  • Foods & Nutrition

  • Human Development

  • Textile and Clothing

  • Extension Education

  • Family Resource Management

  • Each department having separate laboratories equipped with basic instruments / equipments, working tables, display devices, sewing and knitting machines etc.

  • Different pilot plants for hands-on training :

  • Nursery school

  • Multipurpose room

  • Display room

  • Testing laboratory

  • Computer room

  • Bakery unit

  • Subject specific institutional library along with University library, has plenty of books, periodicals and journals and is connected with e-cybrary with high speed internet and other requirements.

  • Highly experienced faculty for teaching various courses.

  • Well furnished separate hostel along with self-maintained mess having huge ground and covered with boundary wall.

  • Auditoriums, dispensary, sports complex, shopping center, faculty and staff housing and other supportive facilities are also available.

 Programme

The DHSc programme consists of 4 Semesters (2 years). The programme commence generally in the month of July/August. The programme comprise of three components – course work, qualifying examinations (internal and external) and training modules.

 

Admission Requirements :

Admission to DHSc is based on the merit as evidenced by qualifying examination followed by counseling. The age of candidate must be in between 15 to 25 years on the date of admission. Total 30 students will be admitted in each academic year.

Minimum qualification :

minimum qualification for applying to the DHSc course will be Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Examination of Gujarat State or other equivalent examination. However, 7, 15, 27 and 3 % seats are reserved for SC, ST, SEBC and physically handicapped candidates, respectively, as per Government rules and regulations

Admission procedure :

Admission to DHSc is strictly on the merit, determined on the bases of the qualifying examination and relevant norms, followed by counseling. Candidate seeking admission has to apply in the prescribed forms available after publication of admission notice which appears in leading Gujarati news papers near the date of declaration of results of Secondary School Certificate Examination held in Gujarat state.

Fee struture :

No tuition fee is charged. However a nominal mandatory deposits and other  fees worth Rs. 1,000/-  is charged at present (year 2007-08).

Course Work

A course leading to the Diploma in Home Science has been started in the first phase. The curriculum includes basics in food science, commodities and its importance for human consumption, food processing, hospitality management, dealing with family and society etc. A detailed study on Food Science and Preparation of different products and their Serving Manners, Storage and Packaging, Food Preservation, Diet and Menu Planning, Human Nutrition, Quality Assurance, Child care and care for Vulnerable groups, Textile and Clothing, Entrepreneurship Development, Basics of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry etc. will also be covered. A study tour and filed trips are the part of curriculum.

  • Certificate :

After successful completion of the course, Marksheets and Certificate will be awarded to each student by the Anand Agricultural University established by the Government of Gujarat under Agricultural Universities Act, 2004 (Gujarat Act No. 5 of 2004).

 

Special Features
  • Each student provide stipend of Rs. 190/- per month by the university.

  • Government scholarship to SC/ST candidates as per rules and regulations.

  • A gold medal is awarded every year to the top ranking student.

  • Students counseling cell for higher education, students' representative council, student union and sports training etc. co-curricular activities…are carried out to support the education system.

The students can be placed :

Self Employment (Entrepreneur) :

  • Ready to Eat / Cook Food (RTE/TRC); Pickles, Jam, Chutney, Sorbet etc. Preserved foods; Papad, Mathiya, Farsan etc. traditional food.

  • Tailoring, Knitting, Embroidery and Fashion Designing

  • Manufacturing of Candle, Card, Soap and Detergent powder, Phenyl, Ornaments, Motikam, Soft toys, Batik and Tie-die work etc.
