In
the year 1946, Amrutlal
Hargovandas established
Sheth Bansilal Amritlal College of Agriculture with the donation
of Rs. 5 lacs. Initially it was under Institute
of Agriculture, Anand and was associated with
Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidhyanagar
till 1972. It became part and partial of Gujarat
Agricultural University from 1-6-72. It has
celebrated its Golden Jubilee during 1996-97.
During 1979, Department of Biochemistry was
established. During 1983 Department of
Agricultural Meteorology and a scheme on Plant
Breeding, Genetics and Cytogenetics was
sanctioned by I.C.A.R. In 1986 a Computer Centre
came into existence. In the year 1997 Plant
Virology laboratory financed by ICAR was added
to Plant Pathology Department.
As on today the college has the following
departments imparting education at graduation
and post graduation levels; Agril. Entomology,
Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Agronomy,
Chemistry and Soil Science, Economics,
Meteorology, Agricultural Statistics, Botany,
Extension Education, Cytogenetics, Nematology
and Biochemistry. Minor Departments include
Animal Sciences, Physics, and Agricultural
Engineering, Mathematics, English and Physical
Education. The departments like Nematology,
Biochemistry and Cytogenetics are at the
developing stage and await expansion.
With research projects in the field of
Biological control of pests, Biofertilizer,
Tissue Culture techniques etc. There is enough
expertise to launch a department of
Biotechnology. Similarly with a resource person
and well equipped laboratory of Plant virology,
establishment of a department of Virology can
impart specialized education in the field. All
India Coordinated Research Project on Agril.
Meteorology, Seed born disease, Plant parasitic
nematodes are also functioning at the respective
departments, besides several other research
projects sponsored by other agencies.
