Genetics and Plant Breeding

INTRODUCTION

Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, earlier known as the Department of Agricultural Botany, came into existence along with the beginning of the College of Agriculture at Vaso campus in 2012. The department offers courses on Genetics and Plant Breeding, Seed Science & Technology, and Biotechnology to the diploma and undergraduate students in the field of agriculture.

MANDATES/OBJECTIVES

  1. To impart practical knowledge on crop breeding practices to diploma and undergraduate students in the field of genetics and plant breeding.
  2. To create entrepreneurs in the field of tissue culture for different crops by providing practical training to the students.
  3. To undertake research in the fields of genetics and plant breeding.

  • RESEARCH

Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding is also engaged with research activities wherein several field experiments are being conducted round the year. The departmental research as approved by AGRESCO focuses on the refinement of various breeding practices on the regional basis and to develop new varieties/hybrids suitable for the middle Gujarat zone. The department also guides PG students in the field of genetics and plant breeding. Here is the list of the dissertation titles of the PG Students:

Sr. No Name of Experiments
1 Genetic analysis of seed yield and its component characters in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum(L.)r.Br.)
2 Heterosis and combining ability in wheat (Triticum aetivum (L))
3 Heterosis and combining ability studies in interspecific hybrids of cultivated tetraploid cotton
4 Variability, correlation, and path analysis for grain yield and its components traits in wheat (Triticum aetivum (L))
  • EXTENSION

The faculty members of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding offers extension-related services and training to the farmers periodically.

FACILITIES

Practical Classroom:

Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding has a well-furnished practical classroom equipped with a computer, sound system, LCD projector, educational charts, and internet facilities.

Tissue Culture Lab:

The departmental tissue culture lab is well-maintained and has a climate chamber for research, breeding or multiplication. It consists of media rooms, cutting rooms and growth chambers. It is also equipped with the latest instruments to provide technical know-how to the students.

THRUST AREAS

  1. Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels so as to make manpower available in the field of Genetics and Plant breeding..
  2. To undertake location-specific production-oriented research on fundamental and applied aspects of natural resource management and other aspects of Plant breeding so as to develop high-yielding genotypes for the farmers.
  3. To transfer the agro-technologies and skills to the farmers.
  4. To arrange a maximum number of field demonstrations on progressive famers’ field for new varieties.
