Narmada Irrigation Research Project, AAU, Khandha farm is located at village Khandha on Karajan-Handod road which is 6 km away from Karjan. It represents the Agro-climatic Region-13 of India and Middle Gujarat Agro-climatic Zone-IIIof Gujarat and agro ecological situations-IX which covered Karjan, part of Dabhoi, Sankheda and Shinortaluka. The soil is characterized by very deep black clayey, imperfectly drained with low infiltration rate.The major field crops growing in this region are cotton, castor, pigeon pea, paddy, wheat, forage crops and in some pocket sugarcane also. Horticultural crops like mango, papaya, banana etc. and vegetable crops are also cultivated in this region.
Narmada Irrigation Research Project at Khandha centre was initiated by Narmada Planning Group, Gandhinagar during the year 1988-89 with aims to develop an integrated water management practices for different crops grown in black soil area of SardarSarovar Project (SSP) command. In this context total 35 recommendations in different crops were recommended for farmer’s community during the year 1988-89 to 2004-05.During the year 2005, SardarSarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, Gandhinagar has remandated the original mandates of the station to fulfill the following objectives
