  3. Soil : Soil of the centre is sandy type containing 80 per cent sand and 20 per cent clay. Water holding capacity is very poor. Depth of the soil is about 2.5 feet.

Introduction

In Gujarat, the maize crop research was started under All India Co-ordinated Maize improvement Project (ICAR) in 1958 at Dahod.  Later on, it was shifted at Godhra, district Panchmahals in 1960. In 1972, the project was systematically executed under the administrative control of the Gujarat Agricultural University. In view of the local need based specific maize crop research, the multidisciplinary and multilocation approach research was initiated with the implementation of National Agricultural Research Project in 1983.

Crop Improvement

  • To evaluate suitable rice varieties through inter disciplinary approach for various categories of situations viz; low land rice (irrigated), upland rice (un-irrigated), hilly area and saline and alkaline conditions as well as Summer season..
  • Production of Breeder Seed, Nucleus seed trustful seed and general seeds of improved varieties of rice for national demand.
  • Acceleration of rice production by development of improved varieties.

 Seed Production Programme   :

During Kharif-2015 season 149.16 Qtls. of Breeder Seed of popular rice varieties was produced at M.R.R.S., A.A.U., Nawagam to fulfill the National as well as State indents.
