“Transferring Agricultural Technology for Social and Economic Growth of Farming Community”

 

Dr.Patel Prabhubhai Purushottamdas, a son of farmer born on 1st June,1954 in middle class family. He belongs to village SONVAD, Ta:kadi, Dist-Mehsana (Gujarat). After completion of matriculation in the year 1972, he enrolled at B.A.College of Agriculture, Anand for higher study and graduated with first class (65.8%) in the year1976. He joined his Post-Graduate study for the M.Sc(Agri) degree in Extension Education at N.M. College of Agriculture, GAU, Navsari and earned the degree in the year 1978 with First Class (3.46/4.00 OGPA). After completion of the Post-Graduation, he first appointed in the Directorate of Extension Education, Gujarat Agricultural University, Ahmedabad as Agricultural Officer and joined on 14/5/1979. Dr. Patel was selected as Assistant Professor (Ext.Edu.) and assumed on 6-9-2004 at N.M. College of Agriculture, Gujarat Agricultural University, Navsari. Under the Faculty Improvement Scheme of GAU, Dr. Patel was deputed for higher study leading to Ph.D degree in Extension Education at Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani (MS) on 25-10-1987 and completed the study on 9-3-1990 (28 months only). He secured First Class (3.72/4.00 OGPA) in Ph.D. Again , he has resumed in Directorate of Extension Education, Ahmedabad and worked up to 25-8-2004. After division of erstwhile GAU, he opted and transferred to newly established Anand Agricultural University, Anand, and joined as Professor (Ext.Edu.) in Extension Education Institute (EEI). During the period, he worked in EEI as well as Directorate of Extension Education, Anand Agricultural University. Dr.Patel has also shoulder the responsibilities of Principal, Extension Education Institute, AAU, Anand. In view of his experience and expertise in the field of Extension Education, the University has posted him as Director of Extension Education, AAU, Anand on 1-1-2007. He is at present continued as Director of Extension Education of Anand Agricultural University.

During his tenure, he has worked in Gujarat Agricultural University as well as Anand Agricultural University in the different capacities such as Training Coordinator, Professor of Extension Education, Associate Director of Extension Education and Director of Extension Education. Dr.Patel has contributed a lot more in teaching, research and extension education activities during his service period. As about 21 research papers in National and International journals, 15 popular articles in Gujarati language, 10 booklets and 03 books were published by him. In addition to these, 10 TV programmes, 15 AIR programmes were telecasted and broadcasted, respectively by him. As about 10 seminars, 20 workshops, 07 training programmes, 01 symposium, 05 conferences, 02 summer/winter schools were attended and presented papers on related/fields. He has been awarded “Bharat Jyoti Award” and certificate of excellence by India International Friendship Society, New Delhi. He has also contributed in re-structuring of Extension Education Programme, Extension Reforms, Establishing new strategies in application of Extension Methodology, formulating farmers interest group and SHGs in rural areas.

Dr.Patel is member of scientific body/committees (06), Govt. body/committees(09), worked in judging panel(05) and member in selection/interview committee as expert in Extension Education subject (10 times). He has planned and organized the Krushi Mahotsva-2007 and 2008 ( A Mega Events-an Extension Education Role Model) and shoulder the responsibilities as Nodal Officer in Anand Agricultural University. He has guided two M.Sc(Agri) and one Ph.D students in Extension Education. At present, three M.Sc(Agri) and two Ph.D students in Extension Education doing study and carrying out research work under his guidance and supervision. He has examined 15 theses and conducted Viva-voce examinations.

Dr.Patel has handled many ICAR and other agency projects of Extension Education. He has proposed different projects on Extension Education, Teaching and Research and made available of Rs.50 crores to the GAU as well as to AAU. Dr.Patel also appointed as National Facilitators for ATMA Project by MANAGE, Hyderabad. Accordingly, he has trained many district and State level officials of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra ,CG, M.P, etc. and guided them to prepare SREPs and SEWP for ATMA Project and get it sanctioned from Govt. of India. Initially, the office of the State Nodal Officer (ATMA) and Director (SAMETI) was established in the year 2005 with the Directorate of Extension Education, AAU,Anand. Dr.Patel has handled this challengeable job and supported to State Nodal Officer (ATMA).

Dr.Patel has prepared the draft proposal for 11th FYP programmes/projects in Extension Education in Anand Agricultural University and got it approved. Besides these, under the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojna of Govt. of Gujarat, three tribal projects, viz Polytechnic in Agril. Engineering at Dahod worth of Rs.17.67 crores, Agri. Polyclinic at Dahod of Rs.1.67 crores and Tribal Farm Women Training Centre at Devgadhbaria worth of Rs. 3.93 crores were proposed, get it sanctioned and implemented in the year 2008. In order to open the doors to attain highest position of the 10th (SSCE) pass candidates, the Diploma Agril. Schools including Home Science School (10+2) are converted into Polytechnics like Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Food Science and Home Economics (10+3) by him.

At present as about 27 Extension Education projects/schemes like KVKs, SSK, ATIC, FAS,T&V,TOT Projects, EEI and diploma/certificate courses etc. of AAU are planned, organized, guided, supervised, monitored and controlled by Dr. Patel, Director of Extension Education, AAU, Anand.
